Bugs and Noses

My brother had come over for dinner.  Missy was in the kitchen finishing things up, and he and I were at the dining room table.  Sary came running up and in mostly gibberish said "Blah blah blah blah bug?" (When she says bug it's more like bukch, ending in a back of the throat sort noise like she's coughing something up.)

She then pointed up at the chandelier.  I looked up at the chandelier and sure enough there was a bug flying around.  She repeated herself and then tiuched the side of her nose.

"What?" I said.

"Blah blah blah blah bug?"  And she did the same thing, point at the bug then touch the side of her nose.

"Oh, is the bug going to land on your nose?"

At that her eyes got really big, she turned 90 degrees to her right, and bolted out of the room as fast as her litle legs could carry her.  She ran to Mommy and hid behind her legs.  My brother yelled "Heck no it's not!" which I think was a perfect translation of what she was thinking.

After I stopped laughing I caught the bug and Sary watched as I let it go out the front door.

"Bye bye bug!"

Grocery Shopping and Choo Choos

Missy and I went grocery shopping together last week.  This is a fairly rare event, as we learned early on in our marriage that if Missy shops by herself she can do it pretty quick and if I help it takes twice as long.  But Missy hadn't gone by the time I got home so we decided to go as a family.

First off, we had to find Sary.  Somehow whenever we want to go somewhere, she disappears.  She's like Houdini.  I have no idea how she does it.

So after we found her, we still had to convince her she wanted to go to the store with us.  "Sary," I said.  "Do you want to go on a trip with us?  We're going to go the store!"

"Nana?" she asked.

"No, we're not going to see Nana.  We're going to the store."

"Pop?" she asked.

"No, we're not going to see Pops. We're going to get groceries."

"Tia?"

"No, we're going to Wegman's tonight."

"Choo choo?"  A question designed to trick us into going to my parents house, as that's where the choo choos are.

And then Missy chimed in.  "Yes Sary, there's a choo choo at the Wegman's let's go see it."  I had momentarily forgotten that Wegman's had a choo choo.  It runs on a huge elevated track in front of the dairy section.  So that convinced her to ccome along with us.

The whole way there though, she kept asking us, just to make sure.  "Nana?  Pop?  Tia?  Choo choo?"  And we'd respond "No.  No.  No.  Yes."

And at the Wegman's Daddy and Sary watched the Choo choo while Mommy shopped.  And for the most part, it was a relatively painless experience.

What's on EV?

Sary loves to watch TV (or EV as she calls it in her adorable two year old words).  I know that can be a shameful thing for a parent to admit, but we at least have her watching educational things.  She watches a lot of Nick Jr.  She likes Ni Hao Kai-Lan, Yo Gabba Gabba, the Wonder Pets (Mommy's favorite), and Sesame Street (if it was good enough for me, it's good enough for her!)

I was working late one night and Missy decided to put a show on for her so she could get dinner started.  In addition to what's on in that time slot, we also keep the most current week of Sesame Street DVR'd.  She likes to watch them, and it helps keep things a little less repetitive for Mommy and Daddy.  So Missy asks her "Sary, what do you want to watch on TV?"

Sary thought about it for a moment and answered "Daddy?"

Missy had been expecting an answer like Elmo.  Sary however thought it would be fun to see Daddy on TV.  So Missy said "Daddy's not on TV.  What else would you like to watch?"

Sary thought again before answering "Bobots?" her word for robots.

Missy laughed, and not having any shows about Daddy or Bobots DVR'd ended up putting on Sesame Street.  And Sary was just fine with that too.

I thought it was a fantastic peek at how kids view the world.  Ask an adult what they want to watch on TV, and they'll list you a couple of shows they like.  Ask a two year old, and they'll tell you the things they want to watch, not necessarily the things that are available.
